The River Market area, with colorful striped
awnings on the red brick Market House, erected in 1858, is crowded with
farm wagons and loads of fresh garden produce as pictured on a 1913 post
card.
The old red brick Victorian City Hall at 4th and Main
streets is in the background.
Farmers with wagons loaded full of locally grown produce, or
hunters back from a kill pulled haphazardly into the square and local
housewives came to buy. It could be anything from freshly killed deer meat
or rabbit to honey, homemade butter, or a crate of luscious cherries.
Local stores carried clothing, hardware and household tools. There were
also tea, coffee and imported spice shops.
Today the fresh produce at reasonable prices and a unique atmosphere make
a visit to the River Market a special time.
